Shannon Nalty, Montana Broker/Owner Nalty Real Estate & Property Mgmt., LLC. , also practicing and licensed in California.
After pursuing a degree in Psychology at Cal State University, Hayward, I turned to the 9 Real Estate Brokers in my family for a recommendation of what to do in my life. I guess you could say I was mildly persuaded to pursue, you guessed it! Real Estate.
27 Years ago with one dark, heavy, wool three piece suit, not the greatest thing to wear when temperatures went over 100, I started my career with Valley Realty. Valley was the largest independent brokerage in the San Francisco Bay Area. They had great training and an excellent reputation. With a lot of hard work and a compelling need to eat, I was fortunate enough to attain the honor of being in the top 20 in Northern California my second year in the business. In 1981, I became the youngest manager in the company's history.
1981 was a challenging year with interest rates at 17.5% and many people putting 2nds and 3rds on their properties, at up to 21% ( not for me or my clients). For many, it seemed an easy way to "put an economic band-aid over the bleeding." As the recession deepened, many were foreclosed upon. I learned many valuable lessons during that period, and also took my office, now Coldwell Banker, to #2 in Northern California. I was offered the #1 office in the nation (under 50 agents). As it would lead to eventual possible corporate promotions and relocation, I respectfully declined.
My wife Denise and I have 3 boys, Sean our oldest, and Kevin and Ryan, our twins. Like many, our frequent vacations in the late 80's brought us to the Western Rockies and specifically the Flathead Valley. With Denise growing up in Montana, and myself growing up in England, with both dads in the Air Force, we were used to relocating. In the early 90's, I obtained my Montana Real Estate Brokers License, we packed up the family and for Denise, we moved back home. The schools and people are wonderful. The weather, for some, does take a person with a strong constitution. For us, it was the best move we ever made. There is some adapting to the environment and culture, as you would in any move, but it has far exceeded our family's expectations. Planning is the key to making the move a success!
Using my past skills, with 2 years at USC in taxation and exchange, 15 years working with the 5 biggest builders in California, and 9 years of Real Estate management with 55 associates, I gravitated into some larger commercial projects in California, Montana and Eastern Washington. It has been very challenging and rewarding.
I still am active in Northern California, with aviation/transportation, cells, faxes, internet, and emails, many times the "process" has become more virtual. I still like the "old school" approach of in person contact. The technology has allowed all of us to be more productive and surgical as to how we conduct the business we do. Effective time management and a heightened degree of communications helps to insure success.
